Protect Your Money from Wire Fraud Schemes

Wire fraud prevention

Never send closing funds based on email instructions alone.

Before sending money, call a trusted phone number and confirm the bank, account name, routing number, and account number with an authorized person.

  • Never rely on email alone
  • Verify every account detail
  • Stop if instructions change

Watch first

How real estate wire fraud happens.

Watch this short explanation before sending closing funds.

Before you wire

Complete these four checks.

01

Call a trusted number

Use a number from the official website, your original documents, or a verified contact. Do not use the number in the email.

02

Confirm every detail

Read the bank name, account name, routing number, and account number aloud.

03

Confirm the amount

Make sure the transfer amount matches the verified closing figures.

04

Verify every change

A new bank, account number, phone number, or payment process must be confirmed independently.

My Closing will not ask you to bypass normal verification because a wire is urgent.

Warning signs

Stop when something changes.

Different email address

Check the complete sender address for added, missing, or changed characters.

Changed account details

Treat any new bank or account number as suspicious until it is independently verified.

Urgency or secrecy

Be cautious when someone pressures you to act immediately or avoid calling another participant.

Emergency response

If you sent money to the wrong account, act immediately.

Recovery is not guaranteed. Fast action may improve the chance of stopping or recalling the transfer.

01

Call your bank

Ask for the fraud or wire department and request an immediate recall.

02

Call My Closing

Use a verified phone number, not contact information from the suspicious message.

03

Report it to the FBI

Submit a report through the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

04

Preserve the evidence

Keep emails, texts, account information, receipts, and transfer confirmations.

Immediate action

Do not continue using the potentially compromised email thread.

Contact your bank and My Closing through independently verified phone numbers.
